AstroGrav is a full-featured, high precision solar system simulator that calculates the gravitational interactions between all astronomical bodies, so that the motions of asteroids and comets are simulated much more accurately than with planetarium applications. The effects of general relativity and radiation pressure can be taken into account, and superb interactive 3D viewing allows you to easily rotate and zoom your view while the solar system evolves.

The AstroGrav software has a huge range of features and viewing options, including views from space or any object, planetarium-style views from any location on Earth, multiple views animated simultaneously, dynamically calculated orbits and trajectories, comprehensive tabular data, and simulation time steps from a fraction of a second to thousands of years. Constellations and over 100,000 background stars are included, with comprehensive data for every star. Several different celestial coordinate grids and a wide range of physical units are available, and editing facilities allow you to create new objects manually, or import from hundreds of thousands of asteroids and comets.

Because it calculates the motions of bodies from their gravitational interactions, AstroGrav is not restricted to just the solar system. Any situation in which gravity is the only significant force can be simulated, and the illustrative sample files that are included with AstroGrav include many examples such as exoplanet systems, protoplanets that evolve into planetary systems, rubble piles and their interactions with massive bodies, complex star systems, and even projectiles and bouncing balls.

AstroGrav is ideal for astronomers, astrophysicists, researchers, teachers, educationalists, and students, and comes complete with a tutorial and full documentation.

DateVersionStatusRelease history
06 Dec 20214.4.3Minor UpdateMade several minor improvements to the 'Edit/Import Objects...' and 'Tools/Generate Ephemeris...' commands. Updated the Solar System sample simulations to 01/01/2022. Improved tables to always displays vertical scroll bars, row scrollers, and help buttons. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
12 Oct 20214.4.2Minor UpdateCorrected a fault that could occasionally cause bizarre behavior during evolution. Made Earth-based views automatically view from the home location. Switched on planetary aberration in all solar system view windows. Added an 'Append Epochs to Names' option to the 'Edit/Import Objects...' command.
06 Sep 20214.4.1Minor UpdateGreatly speeded up evolution in cases where most objects are of low mass. Corrected a fault that caused evolution to fail after importing the same asteroid or comet twice. Corrected faults that caused all orbits to disappear after cancelling an object edit. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
06 Aug 20214.4Major UpdateMade major improvements to the evolution algorithm. Added search options to find celestial positions. Simplified the handling of trajectories and histories. Simplified the handling of invisible objects. Added the Hilda category to the asteroid importer. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
29 Jan 20214.3.1Minor UpdateMade the 'View/View From...' command available on ephemeris windows. Corrected a fault that could cause some of the information to be missing in view window popups. Corrected a fault that could cause a poor quality display on some high resolution screens. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
23 Jan 20214.3Major UpdateMade major improvements to ephemeris generation and the handling of dates and times. Added more options for drawing trajectories and histories. Added a greatly improved precession model. Corrected a fault that could cause evolution to run extremely slowly. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
09 Oct 20204.2.2Minor UpdateCorrected a fault that could cause imported asteroids to be incorrectly positioned. Appended the name of the small body supplier to the name of an imported asteroid or comet. Made the structure of a simulation consistent with the evolver mass threshold. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
06 Oct 20204.2.1Minor UpdateReplaced the four MPC asteroid import choices with the two 'MPC Asteroids' and 'MPC Asteroids (Daily)' choices. Added the 'Sort Designations By Time' checkbox to the asteroid and comet tables. Added several new time units. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
21 Aug 20204.2Major UpdateAdded a completely redesigned object editor. Added about 1,000,000 asteroids from the Lowell Asteroid Orbital Elements Database to the object importer. Improved simulation evolution and ephemeris generation. Added the Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) unit. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
14 Jan 20204.1.1Minor UpdateCorrected a serious fault that made it impossible to use the optional faint star files. Corrected a fault that made the offline help inaccessible. Changed the way that smaller bodies reflect light so as to better simulate the opposition surge effect. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
20 Dec 20194.1Major UpdateAdded new comet and asteroid search options. Greatly improved evolving to events. Made it easier to view from the home location. Made several improvements to the appearance and performance when drawing views. Updated the Solar System sample simulations. Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
